Flower Banner

Giant anniversary celebration banner unveiled in Rusthall Village.

St. Paul’s Church Centre is grabbing the attention of Rusthall residents with a blaze of colour.  A specially commissioned flower banner is covering the front of the Centre bringing a community project for the church’s 175th anniversary to glorious completion.  Made up of around 1800 crocheted and knitted flowers it’s the idea of local Rusthall crafter and church member, Jean Kerr.

Jean’s aim is that its message, the celebration of the anniversary, is eye-catching, and the colourful mixture of the individually made flowers has guaranteed that for sure.

Around 1800 flowers have been made for the project. That’s approximately 800 hours of crocheting and knitting with a further 150 hours of stitching, but the completed banner only weighs in at an amazingly lightweight 7kg!

Jean says “People from all over the local villages have been making flowers for months for this project. Many groups have made contributions including local care homes, craft groups in Rusthall and Langton and the two congregations of St Paul’s, Rusthall.  It’s been put together by a fantastic group of people including Ronnie our vicar, who is a dab hand with a needle and thread! Who knew?!”

The Banner was officially unveiled and blessed on Sunday 27th April at a joint service at The Church Centre, and will be on display for the next few months.
